San Mateo County Democratic Party Newsletter
SEPTEMBER 2017

Dear San Mateo County Democrats,

I have a lot to write about today, in particular about Elections, Endorsements, Education and Executive Board topics.

Now that summer is nearly over, we must gear up for a Fall of Resistance.  It’s time for us to start defining our game plan for 2018 to keep San Mateo County Blue.  It has never been more important for the San Mateo County Democrats to get engaged in a battle for democracy. In June and November 2018, there will be a significant number of City Council, Board Supervisor, and Constitutional races, and ballot measures. We need to be ready and we need everyone’s help starting now.

One of the most important things we can do at this time is to register people to vote. This includes young people who are just turning 18, people of all ages who aren’t registered, new residents in the County and people who have moved within the County.  If you want to learn more, view our website at: www.smcdems.org/voting or the California Secretary of State’s website at www.voterguide.sos.ca.gov.

We are looking for a team of people who want to start voter registration activities this fall with tabling at community events and fairs. If you’re interested, send an email to [email protected] and we can get you started.

You can also assist efforts to turn other States Blue with the Sister District Project CA-14 in Virginia and New Jersey (www.sisterdistrictproject.com) and take back the House with Swing Left (www.swingleft.org).  There are many other organizations launched after the tragic presidential election of November 8, 2016.

Your San Mateo County Democratic Party (SMCDems) has been very busy. An Endorsements Committee has been working through the month of August to prepare for the November 7 2017 Consolidated School and Special District Election. Nineteen individuals have sought our endorsement and we will also evaluate eight ballot measures. The Committee’s recommendations will be brought to the September 21, 2017 General Meeting for discussion and vote by the elected members of the Democratic Central Committee.

The Program Committee is pleased to bring Christine Pelosi to the September 21 General Meeting. Christine chairs the California Democratic Women's Caucus, is a member of the Democratic National Committee, the 2016 Electoral College, and author of Campaign Boot Camp 2.0 (2012) and Campaign Boot Camp: Basic Training for Future Leaders (2007), a guide to successful campaigning. She is a very dynamic speaker.

Every year, the California Democratic Party hosts a State Convention for all Democratic delegates. There are also two Executive Board meetings held for a smaller number of elected delegates. The Winter E-Board will be held at the Westin San Francisco Airport in Millbrae from November 17-19, 2017. We’re now discussing whether we’ll hold an informal gathering at our November 16 General Meeting or develop an event as part of the E-Board weekend. WE’ll keep you posted.

Thanks for everything you are doing to keep San Mateo County Blue.

Cecily Harris, Chair

San Mateo County Democratic Party
