March 19th SMCDems Meeting Accomplishments

STATEMENT ON RECENT ACTS OF VIOLENCE, HATE, AND ABUSE OF POWER

In the span of a single weekend deep into the holiday season, communities across the globe were shaken by devastating acts of violence and cruelty.

On Saturday, December 13, a shooter killed two students and wounded nine others at Brown University in Rhode Island. On Sunday, thousands of miles away across the continental United States and the Pacific Ocean, a terrorist massacred at least sixteen people celebrating Hanukkah on Bondi Beach in Australia. Later that same day back in the United States, a beloved Hollywood director, a fierce defender of democracy and outspoken critic of Donald Trump, was brutally murdered in his Los Angeles home, only to have the President of the United States respond with mockery rather than empathy and grace for the grieving family.

The San Mateo County Democratic Party stands with the Brown University community following this senseless act of barbarity, the 76th school shooting in the United States in 2025. This tragedy once again underscores the urgent need for common-sense gun safety laws and robust, accessible mental health support nationwide.

We stand in solidarity with the Jewish community in Bondi Beach and unequivocally condemn the antisemitism that fueled this horrific attack. We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to confronting hate-based violence and extremism in all its forms and to building a society rooted in compassion, inclusion, and mutual respect.

We also denounce the President’s hateful and dehumanizing remarks following the horrific deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner and call on the Republican Party to publicly reject this dangerous rhetoric. Leadership in moments of tragedy demands empathy, restraint, and moral clarity, not cruelty.

Beyond these individual acts of violence, we are deeply alarmed by the growing use of fear as a tool of governance in our own country. The San Mateo County Democratic Party is gravely concerned by ongoing ICE raids, family separations, deaths in immigration detention, inhumane conditions in detention centers, and reports of individuals being taken from their homes and communities without due process. These actions inflict lasting trauma on immigrant families, including here in San Mateo County, where immigrants are an essential part of our schools, workforce, and civic life.

No one should die in government custody. No family should live in fear of sudden detention. Fear should never be a governing strategy in a democracy.

We call for accountability, humane and just immigration policies, and an immediate end to practices that criminalize and dehumanize our neighbors. We remain committed to standing with all communities targeted by violence, hate, or abuse of power and to building a future grounded in dignity, safety, and justice for all.
