San Mateo County Democratic Party Newsletter
August 2016

Dear {{ recipient.first_name_or_friend }} --

San Mateo County Democrats say LET'S GET DEMS ELECTED!

THE BLUE TIDAL WAVE IS ON ITS WAY! After an incredibly inspiring Democratic National Convention, it's time to roll up our sleeves.

The very disturbing and strange polling numbers means we can't take ANYTHING for granted in the Presidential race as well as Senate and Congressional races around the Country. We COULD take back the Senate and gain big numbers in the House. And we have an amazing team in Clinton and Kaine. Senator Kaine proved he's got what it takes to be a great partner to lead the country. The amazing stories from Clinton supporters, family and friends enlightened us even more to Hillary's dedication to making our country a better place for all and her HERstory of activism in her younger years. She truly has proven she's a Public Servant!

Senator Bernie Sanders graciously submitted his delegates to the grand total. Unfortunately the Bernie delegates weren't having it. They even booed their own candidate.  We need to remind ourselves that for most of them, this was their first experience being a delegate and being involved in party politics. Their in-experience clearly showed. This is the way of the nomination process. One candidate wins, one concedes.

It is up to us in the party to embrace their passion and desire for change and to listen, collaborate and respect their dedication. We need those new voices and especially the new YOUNG voices!

I couldn't have been more proud to see our Democratic superstars like Elizabeth Warren, Bill Clinton, Cory Booker, Bernie Sanders, our governor Jerry Brown, Kamala Harris, and of course, President and Mrs. Obama take the stage and fire up the crowd with truth, statistics and de-bunking the lies from the right.

If this convention has proven anything, it is that our Party is the Party with the understanding of our complex world, ideas about the underlying problems and how to fix them and the wherewithal to undertake those fixes (rather than making empty promises of greatness).

Congratulations to all who won in the June Primary, BUT.....

I call on all who prevail in these races to be advocates for bringing all Democrats together once our candidate for U.S. President is revealed. We need to get Democrats elected at ALL LEVELS!

There are races in other states that can also use our help! NEVADA, PENNSYLVANIA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, OHIO, NORTH CAROLINA AND FLORIDA are Senate races we could take! MAINE, NEW YORK, WISCONSIN, IOWA, MINNESOTA, TEXAS, ARIZONA AND NEVADA all have Congressional races that are toss ups!

LETS GET TO WORK!

San Mateo County Democrats say LET'S GET DEMS ELECTED!

The California Primary is just a little over a month away! June 7th is IMPORTANT! The VOTE BY MAIL ballots go out on May 9th.

In this month's newsletter, I'm asking...what are you doing to get DEMS elected?

Attending rallies? Making Calls? Walking precincts? Donating money or time? Telling your friends? Using Social Media? Or ALL OF THOSE? We must be aggressive in the coming months.

The pundits are predicting a record turnout for the GOP here. We can't let them take hold again in our state. Their dysfunction has no place here in California.

And, across the United States there are several races that could be won by Dems with support from us! Be prepared to create a BLUE TIDALWAVE!

OUR FIRST 2016 FUNDRAISING EVENT was a HUGE success!!!
The Vinyl Room in Burlingame was an amazing host.

We had TWENTY FOUR co-sponsor candidates and activists who helped to make it such a great event!
Thanks to all who turned out and participated!

The Republicans State Convention was last month and lots of excitement there with all 3 of the GOP presidential frontrunners making an appearance. Protestors in front of the hotel made the Donald walk over a wall and up an embankment to get into the venue through the back door.
Although there was SOME violent behavior by some out of county visitors, the Burlingame Police Dept and associate law enforcement did and amazing job controlling the crowd. They should be commended for their professionalism and restraint.

On May 1st, all over California in 53 Congressional districts with approximately 4,600 candidates, the DNC caucuses were held for Hillary and Bernie delegates interested in going to the National Convention in Philly.  Only 317 will actually serve as delegates, their next step will be waiting for the Primary results on June 7th. The percentages for each candidate ill be tabulated and delegates assigned according to the voter turnout for each candidate.

Chair's Letter - JULY 2015

San Mateo County Democratic Party Newsletter

JULY 2015

Happy JULY 2015 San Mateo County Democrats!

Friends and Democrats;

JUNE 2015 will go down in history for the reinforcement of DEMOCRATIC VALUES by our nation AND our state!

First, with the decision by SCOTUS on June 25th in KING V. BURWELL by 6-3 to forever put to rest the debate on the Affordable Care Act. It is and will forever be the law of the land despite some Republican's promises to still try and derail it, calling it an "illegal action".

Health Care for ALL is a DEMOCRATIC VALUE.

Second, on the 26th, they ruled by a 5-4 margin in favor of Marriage Equality in OBERGEFELL V. HODGES. Same Sex Marriage is now legal in the remaining 13 states of our country. The United States now becomes the 21 nation in the world to have full marriage equality for all it's citizens. As I write this letter, they are now issuing licenses to same sex couples in Kentucky! A truly landmark day, especially in the South and Midwest.

Our own Democratic Party Chairman John Burton had this to say

The U.S. Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges to overturn state laws banning same-sex couples from marrying is a victory for the American ideal of equality. The recognition of loving families that started in California and Massachusetts has now swept the nation.

When I introduced Assembly Bill 167 in 1991 to change California law to permit same-sex marriage, a conservative commentator called it the “battle of the century.” This battle is now over, but it won’t end Republican-led attacks on gay Americans, and California Democrats won’t stop fighting discrimination against gay and lesbian families and students.

Marriage Equality for ALL is a DEMOCRATIC VALUE.

Our State Representatives continue to lead the way in forward thinking legislation. Our own State Leaders, Senator Jerry Hill, Assemblyman Phil Ting, Kevin Mullin and Rich Gordon are making us proud every day in Sacramento.

The fight for our DEMOCRATIC VALUES  has only just begun. There are many fronts for us to consider now as we look to 2016 and the candidates that will represent our party.

  • Women's Rights and Equality and complete access to reproductive services and health care
  • Safety for our Children in the education system, be it bullying or vaccinations
  • A fully inclusive Employment Non Discrimination Act (ENDA) to include Transgender Rights
  • Compassion in the End Of Life for all
  • Immigration Reform
  • Strengthening of Gun Regulations
  • Environment and Renewable Energy
  • and finally, federal  VOTING RIGHTS reform

These ALL are DEMOCRATIC VALUES!

We must use 2015 to build momentum for the coming 2016 election cycle, by building  our base of voluteers and participants in all things Democratic in San Mateo County. Talk with your friends, neighbors and family about the SAN MATEO COUNTY DEMOCRATS. Get them to a meeting or event or even have them join one of our Democratic Clubs.

Chair's Letter - February 2015

Hello Democrats and welcome to my first monthly Chair’s Newsletter to you all!

JANUARY MEETING NEWS:

At our January 15, 2015 meeting, Officer Elections were held. The results are:

Jeffrey Adair, Chair
Cecily Harris, So. Vice Chair
Nick Akers, No. Vice Chair
Cliff Robbins, Corresponding Secretary
Mitchell Oster, Recording Secretary
Nancy Yarbrough, Controller
David Burruto, Immediate Past Chair

I am honored to have been elected the new Chair in a unanimous vote of confidence. I have very large shoes to fill after 6 years of fine leadership by David Burruto. David will continue to advise and guide with his expertise and knowledge. I know that you all join me in sending him a very big THANK YOU for his service.

I’m also very excited to have Nick, Cliff and Mitchell continue in their roles. Cecily is taking on my Vice Chair role with lots of great ideas and energy and Nancy takes on her Controller seat with years of experience running a business and volunteerism for the SMC DEMS!

One of my first tasks at the January meeting was to handle the election of our representative to the California Democratic Party Executive Board. Cecily Harris will continue in that role as the female EBoard Rep--alongside me, as the male rep. Our next Eboard meeting will be in Burlingame on August 14th-16th. I will be calling for volunteers for this to make sure we welcome everyone properly to our County!

Chair's Letter - January 2015

Happy New Year Democrats!

Both the election and holidays seasons are now behind us and we must again turn our attention to the many challenges and opportunities ahead in 2015.

This will include an as-of-yet to be identified social event to compensate for our holiday party that was unfortunately cancelled due to the severe storms in December. Democrats will have the opportunity to meet in a social atmosphere in another venue and continue to build relationships with one another. Be on the lookout soon.

In addition, a number of efforts will be underway to help the San Mateo County Democratic Party build the necessary resources in anticipation of very competitive Presidential Primary and General Elections.

The January 15, 2015 General Meeting will also feature the Democratic Central Committee biannual reorganization at which members will elect committee officers.

Chair's Letter - December 2014

It's the Holiday Season and time to celebrate a year of victories and hard work.

To mark the occasion the San Mateo County Democratic Party will be hosting our annual Holiday Party on December 11 in lieu of our regular meeting.

The Holiday Party will begin at 7 pm and be held at our usual venue, the neighborhood clubhouse located at 1117 Lord Ivelson Lane in Foster City. MAP

Everyone is invited and asked to bring a potluck dish to share. Drinks and desserts will be provided.

In addition, we will be collecting unwrapped toys for the Bayshore Child Care Services Center in Daly City. Toys or cash donations are most welcome.

Chair's Letter - November 2014

With Election Day nearly upon us, we are planning the final push for our Get Out The Vote (GOTV) weekend, November 1-4 at our HQT at 1328 El Camino Real in Belmont. We want you to be part of it.

Thanks to all of you who have been phoning voters and walking precincts over the past six weeks, we have identified voters who support our candidates and ballot measures and now we have to make sure they mail their absentee ballots in on time or know where there polling place is located if they will vote in person on election day.

We need your help to reach these voters. We will be calling all weekend and through Election Day, up until the polls close. We will open early on election day to reach county voters as they are heading off to work and call supporters of Democratic candidates in tight US Senate races throughout the country.

All you need is your cell phone, charger and an unwavering commitment to Keep California and the Senate Blue! We will train you and provide food and beverages each day. We have a limited number of loaner phones so if you don't have a cell phone you are still welcome to join us.

If you prefer to hand out literature we can set you up with endorsement cards containing the Democratic Party's recommendations for all local and state candidates and ballot measures.  You can pass them out at BART and Caltrain stations or give them to friends, family and neighbors. These are available now and you're welcome to come get them right away.
