Chair's Letter - June 2018

Dear San Mateo County Democrats,

The 2018 Primary Election was last Tuesday. It has been very exciting to see the large numbers of Democrats running for office locally, statewide and nationally. It's a very diverse group representing new generations of candidates and includes many more women. The candidates represent the communities for which they want to serve. It’s about time.

San Mateo County Democratic Party Newsletter
OCTOBER 2017

Dear San Mateo County Democrats,

I am in shock as I write to you today. News about a horrific mass shooting in Las Vegas is overwhelming the news. I keep asking my friends and family why these situations continue to occur in this great country. After weeks of catastrophic hurricanes in the Caribbean and Gulf states, I’m feeling pretty devastated and have contributed to the Red Cross as much as I can. If you can’t make a financial donation, consider donating blood in memory of or in honor of the victims of these natural and human-caused events.

On the bright side, a very hard working SMCDems Endorsements Committee brought forward a high caliber list of individuals and measures for endorsement at the September 21 General Meeting. These individuals earned our endorsement:

SEPTEMBER 2017

Dear San Mateo County Democrats,

I have a lot to write about today, in particular about Elections, Endorsements, Education and Executive Board topics.

Now that summer is nearly over, we must gear up for a Fall of Resistance.  It’s time for us to start defining our game plan for 2018 to keep San Mateo County Blue.  It has never been more important for the San Mateo County Democrats to get engaged in a battle for democracy. In June and November 2018, there will be a significant number of City Council, Board Supervisor, and Constitutional races, and ballot measures. We need to be ready and we need everyone’s help starting now.

San Mateo County Democratic Party Newsletter
AUGUST 2017

Dear Friend --

Fifty years ago was a time of major social change in America. It was the Summer of Love in San Francisco. Young people disagreed with the “establishment” and showed it through music, art and what they wore. “Make love, Not war,” they told us.

Today is another time of major social change. Platforms separate Democrats and Republicans. Divisions within the parties keep our elected Representatives and Senators from drafting and passing the laws our great country needs. Chaos reigns in the West Wing. We know this, but let’s not let the media alarms distract us.

JULY 2017

Dear Friend --

It's summertime and the pace of resistance is not going to slow down. We have so much to do to fight back to hold onto our Democratic values. And like you, I am spending a lot of time tracking the news, making calls, sending emails, and attending events.

When I’m not being a news junkie or activist, I am working with some great Democrats to plan the San Mateo County Democratic Party’s signature summer fundraising event and launching the fall political program.

Standing Together 2017

SMC DEMS endorsed Democrat, San Carlos Mayor Cameron Johnson and other local elected officials led another effort to inspire positive action among Peninsula residents sharing similar values. Johnson observed a shared concern among residents around the trajectory of progressive causes following the November election, and received several inquiries as to what residents could do in response.

With the help of volunteers, Johnson, San Mateo County Democratic Party and a host of other local elected officials coordinated the Standing Together fundraiser Wednesday at Devil’s Canyon Brewery in San Carlos.

“It’s an opportunity to spend some time with people who share their concerns and talk about ideas for thinking about our world,” he said.

The organizing group identified four nonprofits as beneficiaries of the event, which more than 300 people attended. The Natural Resources Defense Council, International Institute of the Bay Area, Emerge California and Samaritan House will each receive a portion of the more than $26,000 raised Wednesday.

Johnson said those participating in the event would be asked to write down action steps with positive impacts that they planned to execute in the following year.

“We think it’s very important that people take action and that they channel their concerns and the anxiety they’re feeling to help improve their country,” he said. “We think it’s important they do something with this time.”

We are very proud to be a co-sponsor!

This is my last official newsletter as Chairman of the Democratic Party of San Mateo County. We will be holding our reorganization elections on January 19th, 2017 and I have decided not to run for re-election this position.

My demands from personal life and my "real job" need more attention. I will continue to support and engage as much as I'm able. It has been an enormous honor and gratifying privilege to lead the party for these last two years. We've increased our visibility, raised  funds, and helped many Democrats get elected in our county. I hope I've made you proud in my leadership and I know I leave everything in good hands with the new leaders.

We will be electing:
Chair
No. Vice Chair
So. Vice Chair
Corresponding Secretary
Recording Secretary
Controller
3 State Party Eboard Reps
3 additional State Delegate seats.

We need YOUR HELP to be strong and set the example, I hope you will consider VOTING for our ADEM delegates to the State Party (cadem.org) on January 7th and 8th, or become a member of one of our sub-committees or an associate member of the Democratic Central Committee of San Mateo County (smcdems.org).

Getting and Staying Involved

Interaction and building of all our current Democratic Clubs is a priority. Regular reports, inviting club membership to our monthly meetings, and encouraging them to join a committee or become an alternate/associate member is important for all of us. The more, the merrier!

Another great way to support the party on a state level is to join DEM2016. *** DONATE EVERY MONTH... A one time contribution or monthly is a simple, easy great way to help keep the party strong all over California!

I want to remind everyone that as elected members of the Central Committee, it is our responsibility to be representatives of Democratic values to the people of our County--helping to educate and guide them and finding and promoting Democratic candidates at all levels of service to our community. This year’s board or associate members could become the next city council person, supervisor, assemblymember, or senator.

There are many ways to get involved with the San Mateo County Democratic Party and we invite all local Democrats to support their Party by volunteering. Please take a look at our Web page, Facebook, or Twitter to keep abreast of events or issues that may be of interest. Make sure when you’re participating in a Democratic event that you use social media to get the word out. Make everyone want to be where you are!

Help me in inviting all local Democrats to join us in keeping San Mateo County BLUE!
